DevCon4, the name given to the Ethereum development community’s fourth official annual get-together, is underway in Prague.
The three day event, which opened yesterday, has scheduled a number of conferences to discuss a range of subjects relating to the future growth of both the Ethereum development community and of the network itself.
On the agenda are discussions on smart contract security auditing, security token offerings and future scalability.
Scalability Central Theme
Scalability has so far been the central theme of the event with Vitalik Buterin yesterday giving a talk on Serenity, the name given to an impending upgrade of the Ethereum network which is expected at some point in 2019.
Serenity, which will be rolled out over a number of stages, will initially see Ethereum move to a Proof-of-Stake consensus model with sharding later introduced as a new model for data storage.
The improvements, according to Buterin, should offer the ability for the Ethereum network to accommodate a one thousand-fold increase in transaction volumes.
Conference attendees were also given a glimpse of Metamask’s new, upcoming iOS mobile app which, according to its developers, will act as “a portal to the world of all things #blockchain.“
The @metamask_io mobile app was just announced at #Devcon4! Everyone’s favorite #Ethereum browser extension is coming to your phone. The team is focusing on not being ‘just a wallet’, but a portal to the world of all things #blockchain. https://t.co/3bvQXuF8gV pic.twitter.com/vcaIkkzcVS

Attendees were also treated to a sing-along from left field at the end of Day One’s proceedings before hitting downtown Prague for some “scalability drinks”. Current live streams from the event are listed on the DevCon4 subreddit.
